Nonprofit Neptun is a maritime cultural association based in Marstal, Denmark, dedicated to preserving traditional seamanship and using sailing vessels as platforms for education, community, and scientific exploration. We operate two historic ships, the brigantine NEPTUN, currently on a world voyage, and VENUS af Marstal, a 35-meter steel topsail schooner originally built in 1900 for Baltic trade.

Starting in 2026 we are seeking a cooperation partner a university, research institution, NGO, or scientific initiative, who wants to develop a marine biology and environmental research program in the Baltic Sea, using VENUS as a mobile field platform.

Why VENUS?

VENUS is uniquely suited for scientific and environmental projects:

  • She is a stable, steel-built vessel ideal for instrument installation and deck-based sampling.
  • As a schooner, she can operate with low fuel consumption and reduced underwater noise.
  • Her shallow draft and maneuverability make her perfect for coastal and archipelago research.
  • The vessel provides accommodation for researchers, students, and volunteers, creating a floating base for fieldwork, education, and outreach.

What We Are Looking For

We are searching for a partner who has a project or wants to help develop:

  • A marine biology research project focused on the Baltic Sea
  • Monitoring programs for water quality, microplastics, biodiversity, or invasive species
  • Climate-related studies, oceanographic sampling, or environmental education
  • Student fieldwork expeditions, workshops, or summer programs aboard VENUS
  • Citizen science collaborations with coastal communities

We are open to co-designing the project together, integrating your academic or scientific goals with VENUS’ operational capabilities.

What We Offer

  • A historic and fully functional sailing vessel dedicated to nonprofit and educational use
  • A salon that can be converted into a research lap
  • Crew cabins for all researchers and involved personel
  • Volunteers and sail-training crew who can support logistical and operational tasks
  • A long-term home in the Baltic, ideal for recurring seasonal programs
  • A highly motivated association committed to maritime heritage and ocean stewardship
  • Visibility and outreach through our public events, social media, and international sailing network
